Fremont Street: Old Vegas Gambling at its Finest
Fremont Street is also known as “Old Vegas,” the home of the neon cowboy and cowgirl winking and urging you into the heart of Vegas. Fremont Street offers vendors, restaurants, hotels, and of course, the original Vegas casinos. These include the El Cortez, the Golden Nugget, and the Horseshoe.
El Cortez
The El Cortez was built in the 1940s and is one of the only downtown Vegas hotel that has its original façade. The El Cortez hails itself as “The Place to Play Slots.” The casino is home to over 1100 slot machines, from one cent machines to five dollar machines. There are also electronic games such as video keno and video poker. Blackjack minimums run as low as two dollars a hand, and craps minimums run as low as one dollar a shot.
The Golden Nugget
Fodor’s describes the Golden Nugget as the “Best hotel downtown.” The hotel began as a “simple gambling hall” and through the metamorphosis brought about by Steve Wynn, the Golden Nugget became an outstanding Vegas original. New owners acquired the hotel in 2003. The Golden Gate lives large, even by Vegas standards. There are 1,805 rooms, 102 suites, and five restaurants in addition to a snack bar, a coffee shop, and a café.
Then of course, there is the casino. The casino in the Golden Nugget offers all of your basic gambling including sports betting and horse race betting. Still, the Golden Nugget offers something a little special: The Poker Room. The Poker Room offers poker players eight tables and all different types of poker from Texas Hold’ Em to No Limit. Texas Hold’ Em tournaments played twice daily.
The Horseshoe
The Horseshoe is one of downtown Las Vegas’s prized older casinos. The Horseshoe offers a rooftop pool, 366 rooms, a restaurant, a coffee shop, two bars, and the casino. The casino offers daily poker tournaments, 42 table games and all of the other fun casino games including blackjack, craps, roulette and more. The Horseshoe also offers a slot club. Best of all, membership is free! |
